Varmam is a subtle bio-energy that aids physiological functions of the body. The places where this energy resides and activates both body and life are called Varmam Points. Together, Varmam Maruthuvam is a therapeutic system that uses touch, pressure, and manipulation of these energy points to treat ailments, restore balance, and promote healing. It’s not just medical—it’s cultural heritage, deeply tied to Tamil identity and Siddha philosophy. Varmam science is well known as a martial art and is lesser known 2highly effective in curing ailments such as auto-immune disorders, neuro-musculo-skeletal disorders, and cancer palliative care. It is believed that Lord Shiva is the first Siddha who taught the art of Varmam to his son Murugan. The lineage extends to Siddha Agathiar, Nanthi Devar and their disciples. Most of the Varmam texts available in Tamil language were written in the name of the Siddhars Agathiyar, Thirumoolar, Bogar, Therayar, Romarishi, Ramadevar. Traditionally, this knowledge was passed down orally from master (asan) to disciple. This rich lineage of Varmam Maruthuvam is being safeguarded and practiced by dedicated asans across the southern regions of Tamil Nadu. The practice was often kept secret, taught only to trusted students, ensuring its purity and protection.
This remarkable therapeutic technique, rooted in the Siddha medical system, is now formally taught and researched by Siddha scholars in prestigious Siddha colleges across the state Tamil Nadu. By integrating traditional wisdom with modern academic frameworks, these institutions ensure that the art of Varmam healing continues to thrive, offering holistic health solutions while preserving an invaluable part of Tamil heritage.
Siddha
“Siddha” comes from the root word ‘Sidd’ which means knowledge or ‘Arivu’ in Tamil language. This system was practised, perfected and well documented in palm leaves at different eras by the enlightened immortals called Siddhars or Arivars. It is said that the sages received their knowledge from Lord Shiva
and has been sustained and nourished for centuries by the tradition of aasan (the master) and disciple. The master would transfer his own verified, experimental, and textual knowledge to his trusted student who would continue the same process down the line.
